Pediatric Ophthalmologist Matthew C. Weed, MD, Joins the Moran Eye Center

The John A. Moran Eye Center at the Ƶ of Utah welcomes pediatric ophthalmologist Matthew C. Weed, MD.

Dr. Weed cares for Ƶren with eye disease and adults with strabismus (eye misalignment) and sees patients at the Primary Children’s Hospital Miller Family Campus in Lehi. He helps Ƶren with "lazy eye" (amblyopia), strabismus, nasolacrimal duct obstruction/tear duct blockage, cataracts, retinopathy of prematurity, the need for glasses, and many other conditions.

Dr. Weed also offers families in the Mountain West the region’s highest level of training in pediatric inherited retinal diseases (IRD). This includes conditions like retinitis pigmentosa, Stargardt disease, Best disease, Usher syndrome, cone dystrophy, and Leber congenital amaurosis.

Dr. Weed heads a new monthly IRD clinic located at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City. The clinic streamlines patient care by offering clinical evaluation, genetic testing, and a genetic counselor all in the same location.

Dr. Weed earned his medical degree from the Ƶ of California, San Diego School of Medicine in 2010 and completed his ophthalmology residency at the Ƶ of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology. He then completed two fellowships, also at the Ƶ of Iowa, one in ophthalmic genetics and a second in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus.

Before joining the Moran Eye Center, Dr. Weed practiced in Spokane, Washington. A Salt Lake City native and graduate of Brigham Young Ƶ, Dr. Weed is excited to return and give back to the community that shaped him.

“Growing up in Utah, I always admired the reputation of the Moran Eye Center,” said Dr. Weed. “It’s an honor to join such a respected institution and bring this level of specialized care to families in the region. I’m grateful for the opportunity to help patients with their vision, and I enjoy creating customized treatment plans with their specific needs in mind.”

A member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group, Dr. Weed has participated in clinical studies evaluating amblyopia and myopia in Ƶren and has published in peer-reviewed journals. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. In 2015, he received the P.J. Leinfelder Award for Research Excellence from the Ƶ of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Weed is fluent in Spanish. He enjoys bodysurfing, backpacking, family time, and making his own slow-smoked barbecue.
