The Utah Tele-Ophthalmology Program (UTOP) focuses on building a consortium of primary and vision care professionals committed to providing high-quality and accessible eye care throughout the state. Cutting-edge imaging and screening technology using artificial intelligence, along with the expertise of the John A. Moran Eye Center, supports this mission to eliminate preventable blindness in Utah. The program is starting with screenings for diabetic retinopathy.

What is Diabetic Retinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetes complication that causes eye problems. It damages the blood vessels inside the retina and can cause blurred vision, vision floaters, and difficulty seeing colors. If left untreated, it can cause blindness.
Diabetes cases are growing rapidly across the world. In the United States alone, more than 34 million people have diabetes, and a significant percentage of people in the US may have elevated blood sugars without realizing it. Because having diabetes increases the risk of complications such as heart disease, eye disease, and kidney disease – it is important for people with diabetes to meet regularly with healthcare providers.
Because of diabetic retinopathy (DR), one of the routine screening tests recommended for diabetes patients is a yearly eye exam.
