About 50% of the gas in your digestive system is swallowed air. The rest is produced during digestion. When excess gas isn’t eliminated through belching or flatulence, it can cause bloating and that uncomfortable feeling that you stomach is full and larger than usual. Here’s how to fight the battle of bloat.

1. Watch what you eat

Foods high in fat and sodium can cause bloating. So can cabbage, broccoli, beans, and lentils. While good for you, these foods contain indigestible sugars, leading to bloat and gas.

2. Exercise

Stay active to keep you digestive system running smoothly and reduce gas buildup. Exercise for at least 30 minutes daily.

3. Pass on gum

You swallow more air when you chew gum. Instead, brush your teeth after meals or rinse with mouthwash.

4. Avoid bubbles

Carbonated beverages, especially those with artificial sweeteners, can cause bloating. Water, on the other hand, flushes excess salt from your system and aids in digestion. And toss those straws as they increase air intake.

5. Stop smoking

If there weren’t enough reasons to quit smoking; it cause bloating, heartburn, and other digestive problems.
