U top 10 in the nation 8 years running

SALT LAKE CITY —Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ of Utah Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ has been once again named a winner of the prestigious 2017 Vizient Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award.

The award recognizes academic medical centers for demonstrating superior quality and safety performance as measured by the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study, which has been conducted annually since 2005. The award was presented on Thursday, Sept. 14 at the 2017 Vizient Clinical Connections Summit held in Denver.

This year, 107 academic medical centers and 161 community hospitals were included in the study, which measures superior performance based on the Institute of Medicine's six domains of care: safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equity and patient centeredness.

"The dedicated efforts of our faculty and staff have ensured that residents of the Mountain West have access to some of the best care in the country across our hospitals," said A. Lorris Betz, Interim CEO of Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ of Utah Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ. "These efforts have also ensured that our students are training in one of the highest-quality systems in the nation."

"What's so impressive about this ranking is that the Vizient study is based on actual care delivery – not reputation. It's an "apples to apples' comparison of academic medical centers, which care for the most complex and sickest patients in the country," says Gordon Crabtree, CEO of Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ of Utah Hospitals and Clinics.

"Eight years running is an amazing achievement. For U of U Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ patients, the Vizient study means outstanding outcomes whether you're having a baby or undergoing heart surgery. It also means U of U Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ posts low mortality rates and that patients receive some of the safest care in the country. When discharged, they're less likely to need to be readmitted," says Robert Pendleton, M.D., chief medical quality officer for U of U Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ.

The 2017 Vizient Quality and Accountability Study Rankings place U of U Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ in the company of the nation's top academic medical centers:

  • Mayo Clinic - Rochester
  • NYU Langone Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ
  • Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin - Froedtert Hospital
  • Rush Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ Medical Center
  • Penn State Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ Milton S. Hershey Medical Center
  • Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ of Utah Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ
  • UC Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ of Colorado Hospital
  • Lehigh Valley Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ Network
  • Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston
  • The Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ of Kansas Hospital
  • Nebraska Medicine
  • Oregon Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ & Science Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ Hospital

In addition to the placement on the top ten list, U of U Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ also placed 5th for Vizient Excellence Award for Ambulatory Care. This is the third year in a row the U has been ranked in the top 5.

"This award recognizes demonstrated excellence in delivering high-quality, patient-centered, efficient and effective outpatient care," said Betz. "This quality of care at our hospital has informed the programming for our new family health center in Farmington and will impact the Sugarhouse Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ Center, which opens later next year."

Vizient, Inc. is the largest member-driven health care performance company in the U.S. In previous years, the Vizient Excellence Awards were known as the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵSystem Consortium Awards.

The composite scoring system uses patient-level performance data from a variety of sources, including the Vizient Clinical Data Base, the Vizient Core Measures Data Base, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵcare Safety Network.
